Safety and Performance
Have you noticed your dryer taking longer than usual to dry a load of laundry or getting warmer than normal? That’s most often the result of a dirty dryer vent and it’s a bigger safety issue than you might realize.
FEMA conducted a study in 2012 and compiled and published a report titled “Clothes Dryer Fires in Residential Buildings.” View the full report here.
The study determined that:
“Failure to clean” is the leading factor contributing to the ignition of clothes dryer fires in residential buildings
In 2010–2014, U.S. municipal fire departments responded to an estimated 15,970 home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year.* These fires resulted in annual losses estimated at 13 civilian deaths, 440 civilian injuries and $238 million in direct property damage
Dust, fiber and lint (28 percent) and clothing not on a person (27 percent) were, by far, the leading items first ignited in clothes dryer fires in residential buildings
Annually, 12,700 clothes dryer fires occur in residential buildings resulting in 15 deaths and and 300 injuries
The leading cause (31%) of home clothes dryer and washer fires was failure to clean

Dramatically Reduce Your Utility Bills
Every 45 minute dryer cycle can cost between $1 and $3, and a clogged dryer vent can cause your dryer to require up to two or more cycles to dry a load of laundry, substantially increasing your utility bill. If your dryer takes more than 50-55 minutes to dry a load of laundry, you may have a clogged or lint restricted dryer vent. Can you afford to pay double?
How Do You Know if You Have A Dirty Dryer Vent?
Are you experiencing any of these symptoms:
- If it takes more than one cycle to dry a load of clothes, especially jeans and towels, cleaning is most likely in order. Increased drying times are one of the best indicators of a dirty or clogged vent.
- If your dryer gets hot on the top of the cabinet during a drying cycle it usually means that the air flow which helps keep the dryer cool is restricted. This can be a broken vent pipe in the wall or ceiling or a clogged vent. Also, if you open the dryer while it is operating you will find the inside of the drum which turns, extremely hot.
- Sometimes you will notice that your clean clothes come out of the dryer smelling musty.
If you answered yes to any one of these you likely have a dryer vent that needs to be cleaned
